The Pilgrim’s Progress
Christian falls: Lesson 1
This chapter of pilgrim’s journey from the land of destruction to the land of eternity is an authors dream and a relational reflection on how people allow the mind of the devil to mislead them from the things of Christ, and their journey to their final place of rest at the end of this world. This story is told in a most allegorical manner about Christian who represents the existing character of every Christian fears in the 17th century and today’s Christian life and struggle regarding the heavenly race. This writing has a message for many of us who are caught in the middle of not knowing whether to turn to the right or to the left because of where we have been in the past. Well the devil has a way of distracting believers from following Christ but because Christian was weighed down by his earthly burden which is sin, he decided to seek the truth. As he realized that he need to seek for life eternal, he left home but his wife and children could not understand why he was depressed and wanted out. Even his friend ran after him but he refused and on the way, Evangelist met him to direct him for his own deliverance to this wicket gate, indicating ‘’shining light” which Christian have captured the vision.
But as Christian continued his journey, he was distracted and diverted by Mr. worldly Wiseman so as to seek for deliverance off his burden through the law of man made law, instead of seeking the word of God and Christ who is more than able to save him from this city of destruction. His friends called Pliable and obstinate were feeble minded people, were surrounded by bad companions, not really equipped for this pilgrimage of hope. And because Christian kept bad company all these years it has weaken his faith in following Christ his Saviour. So this lesson teaches us to be ready to forsake our bad companions, our pleasures, wealth and follow Christ with all our hearts without looking back. Even though that Pliable was a little bit willing to go on this beautiful eternal journey, he was not really in his mind because devil the accuser of the brethren was out to confuse him more of his sins and stand to ccuse him before his creator God. Even though, yet The Pliable was willing to go further because of all the good promises he heard from his friend Christian.
This is because most people think of heaven in a more literally way, as the book of revelation explained it in a figurative manner without realizing the inward meaning of it. They are only attracted, charmed and satisfied by what the heaven can give to them but not really about their true salvation in Christ. Thus, we ought to be prepared to go extra mile for our journey with Christ, concerning our goal the ultimate salvation in Christ Jesus the King of our life and author of our faith.

Christian finds Grace: Lesson 2
In this Lesson we discovered how the two pilgrims ended up in the slough of despond as they struggle within their house. Based on their little prayer life, they were burden by their sins as they have not got enough faith to sustain them and hence start to sink in the mire. They both ended up being captured by the ‘giant despair’ who later took them to his own doubting castle. On reaching to his castle, Christian and Pliable were starved, beating and imprisoned and on top of all this humiliation, giant despond expected them to commit even suicide.
However, as the pair kept on enduring their horrible ordeal, suddenly Christian managed to realise that he still has the key of hope called promise. Thinking hard and on remembering that the key of promise will eventually open all the locked doors and gates of this doubting castle, he thus used the key as soon as he could and they all escaped the enemy’s camp without looking back. The wounds sustained by Christian were healed by God as He stretched His hand to heal him with leaves of the tree of life.

Through the Valley of Humiliation and Death Lesson: 4
This poetic book talks about how Christian spent three days and he was even clothed with armor when he left. This reflects the verse in Ephesians 6: 11 – 18, which equips him to be able to stand fast and firm against devil but the battle here, refers to Apollyon in the valley of humiliation. However, when the battle was over, he started his journey of travelling in the night through the valley of the shadow of death. While he was pondering and stationed in the very midst of all the terror and gloom which he faces, he then suddenly and clearly heard some words of encouragement on Psalm 23 telling him this voice probably might be spoken by his friend called faithful “Yes even though I may be walking through the valley of the shadow of death, nothing shall make me to be afraid of any evil, for my God is with me; his rod and staff will surely aid and comfort me. Psalm 23:4. However, as soon as he left the valley of humiliation, he noticed the light and sun rising to give him a brighter hope on a new day. This shows that there is a light at the end of every tunnel for those who persevere after righteousness of God.

Lesson 6: Vanity Fair.
But Faithful has come to accompany him to the place called Vanity Fair where they sell all sorts of things and all kinds of worldly activities take place here, in order to distract the Pilgrims attention from good to bad.
Nevertheless, both Christian and Faithful were arrested, beating and even detained, Faithful was executed as a martyr because of refusing to participate in this worldly and awful business of theirs in the Vanity Fair. Hopeful another resident of Vanity Fair helps in accompanying Christian throughout the rest of the journey. In this passage allegorically, John Bunyan saw in his dream as the Vanity Fair has the corruptible merchandise such as houses, trades, places, honours, land, blood, souls, bodies, cheats, fools, rogues and apes etc being displayed purposely in order to distract and hinder the Pilgrims ways from the incorruptible crown that awaits them on the other side of the Zion. The author allegorically demanded of paying attention to invisible thing rather than visible thing because visible thing will perish soon.

Lesson 7: Hopeful joins Christian.
The allegory told in this Lesson seven is about Hopeful who was at hand to accompany Christian since Faithful has been killed by the enemy in the valley of the destruction. But, the road leading to the high way is completely rough, notwithstanding, both Christian and Hopeful left the highway in order to travel on the straight and easier road called By Path Meadow.
However, as the two pair journeyed, they met with heavy rainstorm, which stopped and forced them to spend the rest of the night but to continue the next day. Hence, as they got up to continue this journey to the place of their final destination, this is called a city of Zion or celestial city. They were soon captured by this Giant Despair who invariably forced and took them to his place called Doubting Castle. Allegorically, the pair was beaten, starved, humiliated and imprisoned. To their surprise, the Giant Despair expected and asked them to commit suicide.
Nevertheless, these pair managed to endure and overcame their ordeal. But when Christian himself was touched by Holy Spirit, he quickly realised that he even has the key of hope called Promise. Immediately, on realising this key of Promise, he quickly opened both the door and gates of the Doubting Castle. As soon as he opened both doors and gates, they ran out quickly as they could and escaped the horrible place

Lesson 8: The Shepherds and Delectable Mountains:
This Lesson named as the Shepherds and delectable Mountains allegorically told us how Christian and hopeful journeyed down to a place where the shepherds had shown them most of the beautiful, charming, and bewitching wonders of the land or area particularly known as “Immanuel’s Land”. These mountains known as Immanuel’s Land are very close to his city where his sheep are and the Lamb of God who was slained for sinners was allegorically use here in John 10:11 to reflect the celestial city awaiting the true believers in Christ Jesus. The author allegorically uses the name shepherds whose names also represented knowledge, watchful, sincere and Experience to tell us how the Lamb of God with these above names had them, Christian and Hopeful to be partakers of his kingdom and prepared righteous and saints of God who endured life at the end their heavenly race.

Lesson 9: Wayward Travellers Confront Christian:
The author told us how the Wayward Travellers had confronted Christian and Hopeful as they travelled along the road. A Christian and Hopeful thus, met with this person called Ignorance, they discovered that Ignorance has a worthless or senseless hope of entering the celestial city. Moreover, Ignorance seemed to understand in his heart that he is got what it takes to enter the celestial city.
However, Ignorant in this Lesson was as confident of his work of his own righteousness as he argued to his friend or companion Christian that he has been honest in paying his dues, tithes, giving alms, fasting and praying and being a good liver who left his country for even missionary work, will surely make this journey to the celestial city.
But Christian continuously reminded him that he Ignorance is still indulging in his crooked way and has not changed to qualify him to the celestial city. And besides, ignorance did not at all passed through the wicket gate as Christian did. In contrast to the present Christians today, we find many claiming to be saved because of their good work. Salvation is not about good work but about God’s saving grace and love of Christ. If we claim to profess Jesus, we must love him and keep his simple commandment. It is good to pay tithe and do good works but these does not base on our salvation. Our salvation is base on God’s saving grace and love, so as Christians we must practice genuine love in we do for the glory of God.

Lesson 10: Ignorance Ignores Christian:
Ignorant as named beleived he met another Ferry man called Hope, instead of the Ignorance to be taken to the celestial city as he hoped. His new friend Ferry man rather ferried him across the place against his faith and hope. Lo and behold, Ignorance was rejected at the gates of this celestial city and he was turned away and cast into the everlasting fire and hell. We can see inspite of all he had claimed to do, his so called good work and paying tithe , Ignorance good work did not save him at the end and hence he was refused at the celectial gate, where he was sent to a permanent hell fire.

Lesson 11: Crossing the River to the Celestial City:
This Lesson 11 of Pilgrim’s Progress tells how both Christian and Hopeful were able to make their land journey through the most and awful dangerous part. They had entered the country of Beulah through the dangerous enchanted ground in this place, allegorically, the atmosphere and air were very sweet and pleasant. In this country they saw the sunlight shore, which gave them hope. In this land of Beulah, there was beyond the Valley of the Shadow of Death, it is out of the reach of the Giant Despair and Doubting castle, because this land is at the borders of heaven. It was in this land that both the bride and Bridegroom eventually renewed their lost contract. Here, they were set and ready to cross over the river of Death on their foot, to mount Zion and to the celestial city. However, the whole journey was hard and rough, it was never easy for them especially Christian, who journeyed from the beginning to the end seemed to have the roughest of it all. Nevertheless, in a most allegorical set up and presentation, Christian was much helped by his new friend Hopeful and finally, at last they were both of them welcomed and cheerfully accepted into the celestial city where they rejoiced with their God.

Lesson 12: Assurance of Blessings Ahead:
The author of this book Pilgrim’s Progress highlighted a very interesting topic in chapter 6 of this book. John Bunyan alludes that the Vanity Fair displays a yearlong fair in order to distract the pilgrimage from their journey of salvation. This passage in an allegorical writing reminds us of some Christians today who are living in the world of distraction.
In this passage, Christian overcame all the worldly distractions he met on his way to the celestial city. Despite of his trials he was a victor, knowing that he has assurance of blessings ahead of him. As Christians, this passage relates to us and warns us of corrupt things in the world, which can only distract our focus and purpose to things of the kingdom which is incorruptible. Because we have a crown of righteousness awaiting us, we ought to bear our burdens and persevere in things of God. So as the evangelist warned Christian that he should always allow the things of the kingdom to be before him. This very verse affects every Christian both in the past and present Christian. A lesson of this is to focus and believe steadfastly in things that are invisible, because visible things perish anytime without warning. In today’s world, many contemporary Christians are being distracted and focus mostly on prosperity of the gospel instead of prosperity of salvation. A lot of today’s preachers interpreted the text of 3 John 2 as financial prosperity. “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health” Gordon D. Fee. quoted this on how to read the bible for all its worth.

Lesson 13: Perseverance, Keep on Pressing and Don’t give up:
Generally speaking, after reading and studying the part one of the Pilgrim’s Progress, I discovered that this book is second to the Bible knowledge. And in my own veiw, I will recommend every believer to have this John Bunyan’s beautiful piece of work in his or her home for general Christian knowledge and commitment to one’s faith.
.As we can see from the background of the author himself, he was a man of perseverance who never gave up on his goal. Apparently, we learnt from the study of his composition, that John Bunyan wrote this beautiful poetic work while in the prison at the Bedfordshire county gaol. We also learnt that he was imprisoned because of violations of the Conventicle’s Act which banned one from holding a religious activites or services outside established Church of England. However, bearing the author’s background in mind, it shows us that we too like the character in this book called Christian and the author himself, can also persevere and never to give up. In the present contemporary Christians today, many of us do not want to have the characteristic and fruits of the Holy Spirit in us. All that some of us are after, is lips service; half leg in Christ and the other half in the world of pleasures.
Conclusion: Thus, the lesson outcome in this part one book encourages us more to learn to persevere, keep on pressing and never give up. No matter the enemy’s craftiness and deceptions, we should always focus on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. In the midst of all situations and ugly circumstances we should not be distracted by worldly issues. A Christian’s journey or heavenly race is all about endurance, love, joy, peace in the Holy Ghost. That is why the scripture tells us in Revelation, that blessed are those who endured temptation to the end. So as Christians we need to be able to endure all temptations through Christ that lives in us. Thus, our lesson outcome in this book is:
1. To shape us into better Christians.
2. Encouraging us in making a commitment to Christian faith.
3. To help us gain more knowledge about salvation.
4. To help us not to be misled and distracted from bad companions and things of the world.
5. To learn to endure, press on and never give up in order to attend our blessings which is assurred by Christ our Lord.
